EFCC UNCOVERS NAIRA, POUNDS AND DOLLARS IN LAGOS.

LAGOS—OperATIVEs of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, found $38 million, £27,000 and N23 million in a private residence on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

 Just as it did on Monday when it uncovered another N250 million from the popular Balogun Market in Lagos the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) again on wedenesday discovered another large sum of money in Ikoyi, Lagos. According to the EFCC about $38m, N23m and £27,000 cash was uncovered in an apartment in Ikoyi during a sting operation by its operatives from the Lagos Zone

The commision acted on a tip-off by yet another whistleblower. It was learned that the house, which belongs to an unnamed Abuja politician, is on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos. EFCC agents, who stormed the house, early yesterday, were still counting the money at press time. EFCC spokesman in Lagos, Mr Samin Amaddin, who confirmed the discovery, said the agents, who went on the mission, were yet to return to base last night.

These gains have been credited to a whistleblowing policies launched in December by Nigeria's finance minister. Whistleblowers can now anonymously provide information through a secure portal, if the information leads to the recovery of stolen public funds, the whistleblower is entitled to between 2.5%-5% of the total money recovered. In February, the minister of information, Lai Muhammed said the policy has led to the recovery of over $180 billion.
