JETBLUE FLIGHT 387 ON HISTORIC MISSION LANDS IN CUBA

The first commercial flight between the United States and Cuba in more than a half century landed in the central city of Santa Clara on Wednesday morning, re-establishing regular air service severed at the height of the Cold War.

Cheers broke out in the cabin of JetBlue flight 387 as the plane touched down. Passengers — mostly airline executives, U.S. government officials and journalists, with a sprinkling of Cuban-American families and U.S. travelers — were given gift bags with Cuban cookbooks, commemorative luggage tags and Cuban flags, which they were encouraged to wave.

The arrival opens a new era of U.S.-Cuba travel with about 300 flights a week connecting the U.S. with an island cut off from most Americans by the 55-year-old trade embargo on Cuba and formal ban on U.S. citizens engaging in tourism on the island.

"Seeing the American airlines landing routinely around the island will drive a sense of openness, integration and normality. That has a huge psychological impact," said Richard Feinberg, author of the new book "Open for Business: Building the New Cuban Economy."

Also Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the carriers selected to operate routes to Havana: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines.

The department said in a statement that carriers will serve the Cuban capital from Atlanta, Charlotte, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York City, Orlando and Tampa.

Airlines are obligated to begin flights within 90 days — right after Thanksgiving — but may begin earlier. Delta said it would launch daily service Dec. 1 from Atlanta, Miami and New York's John F. Kennedy Airport, "subject to Cuban regulatory approval," with flights going on sale Sept. 10.Spirit also said it aims to run twice-a-day flights to Havana beginning Dec. 1, from Fort Lauderdale.

The restart of commercial travel between the two countries is one of the most important steps in President Barack Obama's two-year-old policy of normalizing relations with the island. Historians disagree on the exact date of the last commercial flight but it appears to have been after Cuba banned incoming flights during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Secretary of State John Kerry said on Twitter that the last commercial flight was in 1961.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes both addressed passengers on board the 150-seat Airbus A320, which was staffed by a specially selected five-member crew of Cuban-Americans. Airline executives changed from American business attire into loose-fitting Cuban-style guayabera shirts before landing.

NEWS FLASH: Richard Branson almost killed after horror bike crash which leaves him covered in blood

Virgin tycoon Richard Branson was left fearing for his life after an horrific bike crash this week.

The businessman was cycling with his two grown up children on the British Virgin Islands when he hit a hump in the road.

He says he was "hurled over the handlebars" and left thinking he would die.

He says his life was only saved because he was wearing a helmet.

But the nasty crash left him with a badly damaged knees, chin, shoulder and cuts all over his body.

He can now only drink out of a straw as he slowly recovers.He said: "I was heading down a hill towards Leverick Bay when it suddenly got really dark and I managed to hit a ‘sleeping policeman’ hump in the road head on.

"The next thing I knew, I was being hurled over the handlebars and my life was literally flashing before my eyes.

"I really thought I was going to die. I went flying head-first towards the concrete road, but fortunately my shoulder and cheek took the brunt of the impact, and I was wearing a helmet that saved my life (however, perhaps they should build bike helmets that protect the side of the face too - does anyone know of one?)

"My bike went flying off the cliff and disappeared. We’ve since recovered the crumpled bicycle, completely destroyed. My cheek has been badly damaged and my knee, chin, shoulder and body severely cut."

He said after landing he "couldn't believe" he was alive and not paralyzed

."I travelled to Miami for x-rays and scans, but have been extremely fortunate that apart from a cracked cheek and some torn ligaments I hopefully will be able to complete the Virgin Strive Challenge next month.

"My biggest hardship is having to drink tea out of a straw. Oh, and being called elephant man by a six year old!

"My attitude has always been, if you fall flat on your face, at least you’re moving forward. All you have to do is get back up and try again. At least I’m practicing what I preach – though a little too literally!"

The Virgin Strive Challenge will see a group of people - including Richard Branson and his children, Holly and Sam - travel from the base of the Matterhorn, more than 2000 kilometres to the summit of Mt Etna in Sicily.

Remembering Aaliyah 15 years after her death.

Singer Aaliyah was just hitting her stride when her life ended in an August 2001 plane crash in the Bahamas. The 22-year-old had released her third album the month prior and was lining up future movie projects as well. Man On Facebook Lures Women In Lagos, Rapes And Robs Them.

It was the end of the road for a father of two, who specialised in using social media platforms, especially Facebook, to lure gullible ladies to hotels, where he sedates, rapes and dispossesses them of their valuables. The suspect, Oluwole Falaseye, 30, who used the name Nipheme Ajanaku, usually posed as an Abuja-based bank manager on Facebook. After familiarising himself with young ladies through regular chatting, he would book for a meeting in a hotel in Festac Town, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State. 

This was how he hooked up with a lady identified simply as Mercy and invited her for a birthday party in Opera Hotel, at Rasaq Junction, Festac Town, last Friday. However, Mercy, a student of Polymer Engineering at Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, had an engagement outside Lagos and sent her cousin, Tinuke, who is also an undergraduate of Public Administration at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State, to represent her. Victim’s account Narrating what transpired at the hotel, Atinuke said: “While at the hotel room, he demanded for my ATM pin, saying he wanted to transfer N30,000 into my account. I was initially skeptical, but gave him because he said he was a bank manager and that his boss owned the hotel. “He offered me an alcoholic drink, but I declined because I don’t take alcoholic drinks. He offered me another, saying it was not alcoholic. I took it. That was all I could remember until I woke up to discover he raped me. “I was bitter, because he is not my boyfriend and I never bargained for such violation. He apologized and we went downstairs for the supposed birthday. 

He later told me he was going upstairs to see his boss. “I waited endlessly without seeing him. When I went to the room, I met the door opened, with the key still with me. I was shocked. “I discovered that my phones, a Samsung Galaxy S6 and another small phone, my necklace, ATM card and my wristwatch were gone. I went downstairs to inform the receptionists about the development and also asked if they saw him leaving. “They said they do not keep tab on their customers. I raised an alarm which attracted people.” She claimed that the suspect withdrew N172,000 from her account. When news reached Mercy, the girls planted a lady, who reached the suspect on Facebook, in the process of which he booked an appointment with her at Festac, only to be arrested by policemen.

 Suspect’s account Falaseye, the suspect, told Vanguard, yesterday, that lack of funds to pay for his three-year-old baby’s medical bill led him into such dubious acts. Falaseye, a secondary school drop-out, said: “This is my first time of doing this. I sell shoes and suits and I travel round Nigeria to buy and sell. But business has been bad and I didn’t have anybody to ask for money to foot my three-year-old baby’s hospital bill. “So I just figured out that I could meet the girl I have been chatting with and take her phone to sell. Yes I stole her items. “I told her to wait in the bar, while I went to the room, took her items and fled. I sold her phone for N20,000.” The suspect, according to Lagos State Commissioner for Police, Fatai Owoseni, would be charged to court soon, even as he warned Lagosians to be wary of his likes.

NEWS FLASH.Google Is Bringing Project Fi's Wi-Fi Assistant to All Nexus Users.

Last year, Google became a cellphone carrier with Project Fi. One of Fi’s most distinguishing features was that it could automatically hop on trusted Wi-Fi networks to reduce your data load. Now, that feature is coming to all Nexus users.

Wi-Fi Assistant, as the feature’s called, can automatically detect when you’re near an open Wi-Fi network that’s trusted and automatically connect you, even if you haven’t set it up yourself. It’s a handy way to avoid relying on your cell network’s coverage, or running up extra data charges.

Google says the feature is rolling out now to all Nexus users in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the UK, and Nordic countries. It’s unclear which devices Google is including in “Nexus users”—presumably Nexus One owners aren’t included, for obvious reasons—but anyone with a recent Nexus device will probably get it.

BETWEEN DIESEL AND THE ROCK,IS THIS A PUBLICIST STUNT FOR FAST & FURIOUS 8?

It seems all is not well between Vin Diesel and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson   two top cast of the famous  Movie series  FAST & FURIOUS , Basically, the set of Fast 8 has now turned into the plot of Fast Five, when The Rock and Diesel’s fictional counterparts traded punches, threw each other through walls, and nearly flattened Rio in the process. WHAT HAPPENED TO “I DON’T GOT FRIENDS, I GOT FAMILY,” VIN?!!

According to TMZ, Johnson and Diesel, who are also both producers on Fast 8, have mostly been at odds throughout production, and Diesel has apparently made some decisions that “didn’t sit well” with the former wrestling champ. While we hate to see our two dads fighting like this, it’s not entirely surprising. After all, a previous report from the set of Furious 7 claimed that Diesel was “extraordinarily difficult” to work with and that he’d often hold up production to go over dialogue and question even the tiniest details in elaborate action sequences.

Given The Rock’s extremely regimented schedule — the man literally has to eat every 90 minutes — he’s probably not down with production delays. E! News also reported that shooting Fast 8 “wasn’t easy for anyone” but was “especially” hard on Johnson. “And while he’s ‘the best guy on the planet to work with,’” an insider told E!, “he's ‘also a very emotional guy’ and ‘likes things to go as he sees fit [while] also being fair.’”

That being said, with a little more than a week to go before the film wraps principal photography, Johnson and Diesel are taking the necessary steps to get their shit together. TMZ reports that they had a meeting on Tuesday, “partly because tensions were running so high it was almost impossible to shoot scenes,” to try and resolve their issues.  in another development  Actor Tyrese Gibson is throwing his support for actor Vin Diesel amid his on-going and ambiguous feud with "Fast and Furious 8" co-star, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson. Gibson took to Instagram on Thursday to defend Diesel and praise his co-star for his "brotherhood."

"If no one else will jump out there and stand up I will," he noted. Vin Diesel cryptically vows to tell fans ‘everything’ "You're my brother for life, let's keep it positive and keep rocking this thing," he captioned a red carpet photo of him with Diesel. BREAKING: POPULAR BRITISH ACTOR, KENNY BAKER IS DEAD.

The British actor who played R2-D2 in the Star Wars films has died at the age of 81 after a long illness. Kenny Baker, who was 3ft 8in tall, shot to fame in 1977 when he first played the robot character. He later played the character in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as the three Star Wars prequels from 1999 to 2005.

NIGERIA MEDIA NITEOUT AWARD , 10TH ANIVERSARY EDITION, COMES UP IN SEPTMEBER .

All is now set for the 2016 edition of Nigeria Media-Nite out Award , recently the organizers  unveiled nominees and categories for the  awards ceremony , which is billed to hold on Thursday September 25, 2016, at Time Square Event Centre, Ikeja, Lagos.
Unveiling the nominees to newsmen during the week, the founder of NMNA and chairman of Solkem Entertainment, Mr. Sola Olugbemiro, said the event had been the darling of many media practitioners, as it lends credibility to practitioners who are excelling in their different areas of concentration.
According to him, “The NMNA was conceived 10 years ago with a view to carrying media practitioners along as an appreciation of their hitherto unrecognized contribution to the development and emancipation of the Nigerian nation. This, we believe, will further encourage and inspire our media practitioners to better their performances and work ethics”.
